Early verdict: 4.5 out of 5. Godzilla Minus Zero is shaping up to be one of the year’s most exciting blockbusters — a sequel that, on the strength of its early critical response, may be even bigger, bolder and more emotional than the Oscar-winning film that came before it. Ahead of its November release, early reviews have praised its spectacle, its scale and, crucially, the human story at its centre.
This is an early verdict, not a full spoiler review: the film has premiered at the New York Film Festival and screened for critics, but it does not open widely in North America until 6 November 2026. What follows is a guide to what the film is, who is in it, when you can see it, and why early reviewers are so enthusiastic.

What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?
Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One (2023), the film that became one of the highest-grossing Japanese films of all time and the first Godzilla film to win an Academy Award, for Best Visual Effects. The new film picks up in 1949, two years after the events of its predecessor, as Japan struggles to rebuild from the devastation of World War II and Godzilla’s previous attack.
Just as the country begins to rebuild, another calamity threatens the fragile peace. The Shikishima family must face it head-on: Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, alongside Minami Hamabe as Noriko, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack.
Why the early reviews are so strong
Early reporting put the film at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from 41 reviews, a rare score for a blockbuster sequel. GamesRadar+ called it one of the best films of the year, while SlashFilm described it as blockbuster filmmaking done right. Reviewers have been especially enthusiastic about the visual effects, with IndieWire noting a dramatic improvement on the already acclaimed effects of Minus One, and Discussing Film highlighting spectacle rarely seen in a Godzilla film.
Some critics think it even tops the original. Others are more measured: TheWrap called it a fine and exciting film but noticeably sillier than Minus One.
Yamazaki’s James Cameron playbook
Director Takashi Yamazaki has pointed to James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) and Terminator 2 (1991) as primary influences on the sequel — a telling comparison. Both are sequels that expanded the scale of their predecessors without abandoning the human characters who made audiences care. Yamazaki, who again writes, directs and supervises the visual effects, appears to be aiming for exactly that balance: bigger spectacle, same bruised, post-war humanity.
The returning cast supports that reading. Hidetaka Yoshioka returns as Kenji Noda, now director of the Disaster Response Bureau; Yuki Yamada is back as Shiro Mizushima; Kuranosuke Sasaki returns as Captain Seiji Akitsu; Sakura Ando is back as Sumiko Ota, now running a local orphanage; and Miou Tanaka returns as Tatsuo Hotta. Min Tanaka joins as Kanji Murakami, a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war.
Why IMAX matters for this film
Godzilla Minus Zero is released in IMAX in North America alongside its theatrical opening. For a film built on scale — a monster, a city, an ocean — the largest screen is arguably the intended way to see it.
Should you be excited?
If Minus One worked for you because it made you care about the people running from the monster, the early signs are that Minus Zero keeps that promise while going bigger. Either way, this is the rare November blockbuster arriving with genuine critical momentum — and the early verdict is that it earns it.
