Barry Jenkins to Direct The Follow-up of Lion King for Disney

Barry King has confirmed that he will be directing the follow-up of  Lion King for Disney. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t like this movie? It is iconic and to be honest, I have grown up watching this, but it never loses its appeal.  Now a sequel of the 2019 hit will be made by writer/director Barry.

Jenkins had confirmed this news on twitter. He is an Oscar-winning director and his works are in one word just amazing.  While the details are not fully disclosed yet, but we do know that will explore the mythology of characters. The follow-up of Lion King for Disney will also devolve deeper into the origin of Mufasa’s. Now that’s a new take. It will be a beautiful step back in time while moving forward with the story.

The Lion King was first brought to the screens in 1994 and received its sequel Simba’s Pride in 1998. Since then it has been a favorite of the audience. Then last year CG made it a worldwide hit with its remake in real picture format. The Lion King had grossed $1.6bn in the box office.

“Barry Jenkins”

The first draft for the follow-up of “ Lion King” for Disney has been penned down by Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson. Nathanson has many blockbuster credits to his name like Catch Me If You Can, Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3, and Pirate of the Caribbean’s: Dead Men Tell no Tales.  Jenkins has had a very successful career. He was behind the If Beale Street Could Talk the adaption of James Baldwin in 2018. And just recently Jenkins has also finished a production of The Underground Railroad. It is a small screen adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

Jenkins is a very busy man as he is also set to direct choreographer Alvin Ailey’s biopic and resurrect a period drama. Jenkins will revive “The Knick with star Andre Holland” the period drama of Steven Soderbergh. Directing Lion King for Disney will be Jenkin’s second project with the entertainment company.

There have been no words on the cast for the follow-up yet. But I can’t wait to see this. With all these great people in the project, I have no doubt the follow-up will be a blockbuster too.
