A third ballot was even worse, with McCarthy losing 20 votes as the night fell on the new House GOP majority, with tensions rising as all other business stalled.

McCarthy had pledged a "fight on the floor" while the right-left engaged in driving away fellow Republicans who were refusing to give him their vote.

It was not at all clear how the embattled GOP leader could rebound after becoming the first speaker nominee of the House.
