New Delhi: The nationwide coronavirus lockdown is going to be extended by a fortnight after May 4, the govt has said.
The home ministry has also issued new guidelines to manage different activities during this period, supported the danger profiling of the districts of the country into red (hotspot), green and orange zones.

There will be considerable relaxations within the districts falling within the Green and Orange Zones, the govt said.

Under the new guidelines, a limited number of activities will remain prohibited throughout the country, regardless of the zone.

Travel by air, rail, metro and inter-state movement by road will remain banned.

Schools, colleges and other educational and training/ coaching institutions; hospitality services, including hotels and restaurants; places of huge public gatherings, like cinema halls, malls, gyms and sports complexes also will stay shut.

The government also will not allow social, political, cultural and other forms of gatherings; and, religious places/ places of worship.

Movement of individuals by air, rail and road are going to be allowed for select purposes and for purposes as permitted by the house ministry.

Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to further extend the lockdown for a period of fortnight beyond 4 May 2020.

The MHA also clarified that a limited number of activities will remain prohibited across India, regardless of the zone, including a pass by air, rail, metro, and inter-State movement by road also as running of faculties, colleges, other educational and training/coaching centers.

Providing clarity on the number of activities and movement allowed within the Red Zone areas of the country, the housing ministry added, “A sizable amount of other activities are allowed within the Red Zones. All industrial and construction activities in rural areas, including MNREGA works, food-processing units and brick-kilns are permitted.”

On 30 April, 2020, the Union Health Ministry had spelled out all major metropolitan cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad—as red zones after the lockdown ends on May 3, and asked states and native bodies to demarcate containment areas and buffer zones for strict monitoring of movement.

Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have the very best number of red zones at 19 and 14 respectively, followed by Tamil Nadu at 12 and every one of Delhi’s 11 districts marked as red zones.
