Dates for Civil Service Exam 2020

Every year Union Public Service Commission holds Civil Service exam. On 4th May, 2020 UPSC decided to postpone Civil Service exam till further notice.This decision was taken due to ongoing Corona virus pandemic followed by a nation wide  lockdown. UPSC will decide the dates for the civil service Exam on June 5, 2020. As and when dates are announced for the civil service exam, it will be ensured that the candidates are given notice of a month at least was the statement given by UPSC.

The Civil Service exam are held annually in three stages  –

1)    Prelims

2)    Mains

3)    Interview

Through Civil Service Exam officer for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) , Indian Foreign Service (IFS) , Indian Police Service (IPS) are selected.

Every year several lakhs candidates appear for civil service prelims. It is considered one of the most difficult exams. This year more than 10 lakh aspirant have registered for UPSC prelims exam. As many as 796 vacancies were announced by the commission to be filled this year.

PROCESS

The UPSC Prelims exam is meant to serve as qualifying exam only. Scores of Paper 1 are only considered for making the Merit list. So, Marks scored in Prelims exam are not counted in the final tally of Mains exam or the interview. 

Civil Service Prelims consists of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The question is of multiple choices, objective type. First Paper is of General Studies Paper 1 and other is General Studies Paper 2 popularly known as CIVIL SERVICE APTITUDE TEST (CSAT). After qualifying Preliminary exam the candidate appear for Main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional essay type, in which two papers are just to qualify and marks of other seven are counted followed by a personality test called interview.

Duration – Prelims exam is of 2 hours whereas Mains exam is of 3 hours.

    

Offered – This exam is conducted once a year only.

Restrictions on attempts –  General – 6

OBC- 9

SC and ST – NO LIMIT

Languages – Question paper is provided in Hindi or English.

Every year more than 5 lakh students appear for prelims exam

Fee-  100/- (for general male candidates). 

        Fee is exempted for other candidates.

Qualification rate – approximately 0.1%

ELIGIBILITY

Nationality 

  • For the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service, the candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • For various other services, the candidate must be one of the followings:

1. A citizen of India

2. A Tibetan refugee who settled permanently in India before 1 January 1962.

3. A citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan

4. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the motive of permanently settling in India.

Educational qualification 

To appear for the Prelims exam, a candidate can have any qualification mentioned below:

 A  degree from a Central, State or a Deemed university.

 Candidate having degree from an open university.

degree received through correspondence or distance Education.

Number of attempts 

The number of times a candidate can appear for the Prelims exam are given below. 

  • General category candidates –
  • OBC category candidates – 9
  • SC/ST candidates – unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.
