Warning: this article contains major spoilers for all of Stranger Things Season 4. If you haven’t finished it, watch first and come back.
The short answer: The crew wounds Vecna but can’t kill him. Max dies in his grip — briefly, but long enough to complete his four-kill ritual — before Eleven pulls her back into a coma. The four gates tear open at once, splitting Hawkins apart in an “earthquake.” And the final shot says it all: Vecna’s merger of the Upside Down with the real world has begun, and Will can feel it.
Who Vecna is and what he wanted
Season 4’s villain was revealed to be Henry Creel — Hawkins Lab’s original test subject, 001. As a child he drew the monsters of a parallel dimension; young Eleven, tricked into deactivating the power-dampening chip in his neck, watched him massacre the lab and blasted him into another dimension connected to the Upside Down.
Vecna learned to control the Mind Flayer and claims he was always behind the monsters — he just needed Eleven to open the door back. His plan: kill four victims in a ritual pattern to tear open four gates at once, merging the Upside Down with Hawkins and reshaping the world into something he calls “beautiful.”
Scene by scene: the finale
- The plan. Nancy, Steve and Robin cross into the Upside Down to burn Vecna’s physical body at the old Creel House. Dustin and Eddie Munson create a distraction — Eddie playing a furious metal solo while demobats swarm. In the real world, Lucas and Max lure Vecna to strike at Max, with her Walkman and favorite song as her lifeline out of the trance.
- It goes wrong. School bullies storm the Creel House, convinced Lucas is hurting Max in a satanic ritual. In the scuffle, Max’s Walkman is smashed, severing her escape route. Meanwhile, Eleven — projected into the void from inside a pizza freezer — “piggybacks” through Max’s mind to fight Vecna directly.
- The mind fight. Inside Vecna’s mindscape, Eleven is overpowered. Vecna breaks Max’s body and takes her life. Eleven watches through the void, refuses to let go, and in a raw burst of power brings her back.
- Wounded, not dead. Nancy, Steve and Robin set Vecna’s body ablaze and shoot him; his burning form is hurled from the Creel House window — but when they look down, he has vanished.
- The four gates open. Max’s heart stopped for over a minute — briefly dead, but dead — and that was enough to complete the ritual. Four gates tear open across Hawkins, and the ground splits in a cataclysm the media calls an earthquake.
- Eddie’s sacrifice. Eddie dies fighting the demobats to the end, refusing to run this time. Dustin later tells Eddie’s uncle the truth: he died a hero, saving Hawkins.
- The Russia front. In the Kamchatka prison, Hopper, Joyce and Murray fight loose Demogorgons and distract the hive mind linking the Upside Down’s creatures — then escape back to Hawkins, ending the long belief that Hopper was dead.
- The final shot. Days later, Max is alive but in a coma — blind, unresponsive; Eleven can’t even find her in the void. The survivors reunite at Hopper’s cabin, but Upside Down ash rains over Hawkins, plants rot, and lightning splits the sky above the gates. Will feels the back of his neck prickle. Vecna is still alive.
Competing interpretations
Did the plan actually fail? Vecna got his four kills, and the merger is underway — so yes, on the big stakes. But the crew proved Vecna can be hurt, burned and driven off, which means the final season isn’t a hopeless war. He is wounded for the first time in the series.
Did Max’s death “count”? The season’s cruelest logic: Eleven revived Max, so she’s alive — but her heart stopped for over a minute, and that was enough to trigger the gates. The ritual apparently doesn’t require the death to stick; it requires the death to happen. That technicality is why the crew lost even as they won.
What’s in Max’s empty mind? Eleven reaches into the void for Max and finds nothing — a void within a void. Whether Max’s consciousness is trapped somewhere, or Vecna holds some piece of her, is the mystery Season 5 inherits.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vecna dead?
Almost certainly not. His burned body vanishes from the Upside Down’s Creel House, and Will — whose connection to the Upside Down runs back to Season 1 — senses that he’s still alive.
Did Max die?
Briefly, yes. Her heart stopped for over a minute — enough to complete Vecna’s ritual. Eleven brought her back, but she remains in a coma, blind and unresponsive.
What caused the “earthquake” in Hawkins?
The simultaneous opening of Vecna’s four gates. The tears in the dimensional wall split the ground across town, and the media reported it as a 7.0+ magnitude earthquake.
Why did the crew’s plan fail?
The bullies’ attack smashed Max’s Walkman, removing her anchor out of the trance — and Vecna was simply too powerful to kill.
What does Will feel at the end?
The familiar tingle on the back of his neck — the same sensation that signaled the Mind Flayer’s presence. It tells the audience, before any character says it, that the threat is not over.
When does Season 5 pick up?
The first volume premieres in November 2026 with a confirmed time jump — so expect Hawkins to have changed since the gates opened.
