Rick and Chelsea: a Greek tragedy
Rick Hatchett returns to the resort after a night in Bangkok, at peace for the first time all season, and tells Chelsea he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. She — who has insisted all season that they are soulmates — believes him. Then Jim Hollinger arrives for a photo with actress Jaclyn, spots Rick, and confronts him, insulting Rick’s late mother and calling his belief a fairy tale.
Chelsea begs Rick to let it go and focus on the love he has, right in front of him. But when Rick sees the Hollingers posing and notices Jim’s bodyguards have stepped away, he snaps, grabs the gun from Jim’s jacket, and shoots him twice in the chest. As Jim collapses into his wife Sritala’s arms, she tells Rick the truth: Jim did not kill his father. Jim was his father.
The bodyguards open fire. Rick kills them both — but Chelsea, who ran after him begging him to stop, is caught in the crossfire. Rick lifts her body and carries her toward the pond. Gaitok, the gentle security guard, takes the resort’s gun and shoots Rick on Sritala’s orders. Both lovers fall into the water together — the image the season opened with. Chelsea dies without a final line; Mike White wrote last words for her, then cut them.
The Ratliffs: poison, second thoughts, and a miracle
Timothy Ratliff has spent the season spiralling under an FBI investigation, on his wife’s lorazepam, entertaining ever darker fantasies of escape. In the finale, he commits to the plan: learning that daughter Piper, back from her monastery stay, cannot live without the family’s money, he decides his family could never survive ruin. Only his youngest son, Lochlan, says he thinks he could live without money — so Timothy spares him.
That evening, Timothy grinds the seeds of the pong-pong fruit — the so-called “suicide tree” outside the villa — and blends them into piña coladas for himself, Victoria, Saxon, and Piper. He watches them begin to drink, then cannot do it: he knocks the glass from Saxon’s hand and dumps the drinks down the sink. But he never cleans the blender. Next morning, Lochlan makes a protein shake in the same machine, swallowing the poisoned residue. He vomits, collapses by the pool, and appears to die in a vision of monks — until he wakes in his father’s arms, saying he saw God. All five Ratliffs survive. On the boat home, Timothy tells his family everything is about to change, but family will get them through it.
Belinda takes the money
Belinda, the spa manager from Season 1, came to Thailand on an exchange programme and recognised Greg — Tanya McQuoid’s widower, living under the name Gary. Greg offered her $100,000 to keep quiet about Tanya’s death. In the finale, her son Zion negotiates harder: $5 million, which Greg wires. Belinda tells her colleague and lover Pornchai she is leaving the next day, abandoning their spa dream together. She and Zion leave on a private boat.
Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate — and Gaitok
At a final dinner, Laurie stops performing. She admits she has been sad the entire trip, and that she has spent her life searching for meaning in work, love, and motherhood — and failing to find it. What sustains her, she tells her friends, is her friendships.
Gaitok, meanwhile, knows Valentin and his friends staged the robbery. In a single moment, he becomes the man Mook wanted him to be — by doing the one thing his Buddhist beliefs forbid: shooting an unarmed, grieving Rick in the back. His reward is a promotion to Sritala’s security detail and Mook’s embrace. The season’s sweetest character ends it having compromised everything he believed in.
What the ending means
The title, “Amor Fati,” means love of fate. Chelsea embraces whatever fate brings, even death; Rick fights fate through revenge and destroys what he loves — a Greek tragedy, as creator Mike White put it. The tsunami the characters fear never arrives; the destruction comes from inside — Rick’s rage, Timothy’s despair, Gaitok’s gun.

Was Jim Hollinger really Rick’s father?
Yes. Sritala tells Rick as Jim dies in her arms.
Did Timothy Ratliff try to kill his family?
Yes. He blended poisonous pong-pong seeds into piña coladas for himself, Victoria, Saxon, and Piper, sparing only Lochlan — then changed his mind at the last second. But the unwashed blender nearly killed Lochlan next morning.
Does Belinda get the money from Greg?
