Each year, 10th of April celebrated as the world’s atmosphere day. It is the reminder of the importance of making it pure and clean as well as to know how important it is for our survival. In our solar system, the earth is the only planet which nurtures life, thanks to its atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere is like a jacket to the planet. It keeps us warm, provides us with oxygen, and also a place where weathers take place.
What is the atmosphere?
Earth’s atmosphere made up of the layer of gases that includes 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.97% argon, 0.4% carbon dioxide and trace amounts of neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen and then water vapour. The atmosphere is a life-saviour for living species because it protects life and absorbs harsh ultra-violet solar radiation. It results in bearable temperature for us during day and night. We all have read in our childhood about the types of atmosphere and what those layers do. Let me sum up again.
Earth’s atmosphere divided into five main layers troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. The troposphere layer is closest to the surface of the earth. Water vapour and dust found on this layer, we can witness clouds here, and also we live in this layer. The stratosphere is the second layer and starts above the troposphere. This layer practically absorbs the harmful radiation from the sun, contains the jet streams and the ozone layer. The top of the mesosphere known as mesopause that is the coldest part of the earth’s atmosphere with the average temperature consists of minus 90-degree celsius. Though the thermosphere considered as to be Earth’s layer, due to its low air density, it’s sometimes thought as outer space. Then comes the exosphere that is the highest layer. This layer is extremely thin. At this point, it merges into the outer space.
How will COVID-19 impact the atmosphere?
As we all know that the world is going through an unprecedented time that no one has thought. Millions of people are suffering from Coronavirus, and many have lost their lives. Due to the increasing cases, governments throughout the world posted lockdown for a certain time. What we’ve witnessed throughout the lockdown is nature’s healing capacity.
Environmentalists were worried due to the alarming rate of danger pollution was creating. In this uncertain time, we have witnessed improving air quality and also how animals were coming out of their dwellings. Well, it is not the time to perform the happy dance but to perform the lifelong commitment of improving the levels of pollution. Few people are aware of the world atmosphere day, the intention behind celebrating is to make people educate about the critical issues that go beyond. The government should be investing more on the culture where people prefer to use a bicycle than other means or to use public transport for their use of convenience.
Air pollution is one of the reasons why the atmosphere is losing its capacity to provide us with warmth, pure oxygen, and also playing dirty with the weather. We’ve already witnessed the worst and killer heatwaves that took the lives of many. Besides, the increasing temperature of the earth is alarming in itself. We need support, not only from the government and non-governmental agencies but also from the ordinary people like you and me where together we can build a sustainable future for us and coming generations. Hence, it is important to celebrate the world atmosphere day not only to raise awareness but also to protect it.
