The verdict
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is one of the year’s most distinctive thrillers — a pulpy, pressure-cooker action film wrapped around a story of faith, fatherhood and grief that Hollywood almost never tells. Mahershala Ali is superb as a man whose two lives are collapsing into each other, and director Bassam Tariq shoots the action with unusual clarity and restraint. If you like your genre films with a pulse and a conscience, this one is worth your time.

The story
Latif (Ali) is a devout Muslim who makes his living as an assassin for hire on the night streets of Houston. He balances prayer, work and fatherhood as best he can — until a phone call on the job tells him his wife is dead. Suddenly he is the sole parent of three children, including a baby who will not keep down formula, and the search for breast milk becomes as urgent as any contract killing. Meanwhile his handler Mike (Nakli) keeps calling with the next target, and estranged family and local threats close in from every side. The film plays out almost as a single long night of compounding emergencies.
What works
Mahershala Ali carries everything. His Latif is tender and terrifying in the same scene — a father soothing a crying infant with one hand and neutralizing a threat with the other. It is a physical performance too; Ali trained in martial arts and sword work for the fight sequences, and the physicality shows in every set piece.
The action is legible. Tariq stages the sword fights and hand-to-hand brawls in clean, unfussy shots. The set pieces never overwhelm the story; each one lands because it is tied to something Latif is trying to protect. Cinematographer Katelin Arizmendi shoots Houston in neon-lit close-ups and perpetual twilight — strip clubs, cramped apartments, mosques, gaudy mansions — giving the whole film a sweaty, nocturnal weight.
The faith angle is the film’s spine. This is not set-dressing. Latif’s religion shapes every choice he makes, and the film’s title comes from a well-known hadith about the honoring of one’s mother. The supporting ensemble — Esposito as a local imam, Tillman as Latif’s estranged brother, John Cho — gives the world texture instead of cardboard villains.
Where it stumbles
The film is relentlessly dark, and a few critics have noted it could use more breathing room. Viewers expecting a conventional action showcase may find the pacing front-loaded with domestic stress rather than fight scenes, and the pulpy plotting occasionally strains against the film’s heavier themes. But these are minor complaints against a film this assured.
The road from Blade to here
The production history adds a layer of meaning fans will not miss. Ali was announced as the star of Marvel’s Blade reboot in 2019, with Tariq attached to direct — a project that spent years in development limbo before being pulled from Marvel’s slate entirely. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother grew directly out of that experience. Watching Ali move through these fight sequences like a man who trained for a franchise role that never came gives the finale an extra emotional charge.
The verdict, again
Tariq has made an inventive, tonally unique action film that trusts its audience with big themes — faith, atonement, what a father owes his children — while still delivering the thrills. Ali’s soulful performance is the headline, but the craft behind the camera is what makes this one of 2026’s standout thrillers. See it on the biggest screen you can find.
