Consistent reports indicate the Coronavirus will have a resurgence in cases during the fall months which coincides with the football season. On the other hand, other experts have pointed to new evidence suggesting that the Coronavirus is no more dangerous than the Flu. It appears the NFL has decided to schedule the season upon the advice of the more optimistic experts. Regardless by the time the season begins proper social distancing protocols should be in place to ensure the safety of the fans and the teams.

Why Is It Number One

The NFL is the most popular sports league in the United States and by extension American Football is the most popular sport. A trend that’s many fans, when asked, say began back during the 70s or 80s when football began to supplants baseball as America’s past time. Though Baseball is still one of the top four sports in the United States it no longer has the same popularity as the NFL and American Football. Another way to look at it is that American football is to the United States what Hockey is to Canada, Soccer is to the United Kingdom, and Cricket to India. While this puts into perspective the popularity, it doesn’t explain why it’s so popular in the United States.

Aggressive game play

While many possible explanations exist, some of the more popular ones point to the two most notable aspects of football. First the teamwork that is required and seconds the fierce almost combative nature of play. In order for a team to win it has to work together as a well-oiled machine. Each member needs to know what they have to do and also trust that their teammates know what they’re doing. The game is played in a very aggressive way with players on both sides actively trying to tackle or physically check other players. Though the combination might be common enough, the combination in this game is fairly unique.

In hockey you have teamwork but the fights that break out are not supposed to be part of the game. The same holds true for any sort of physical contact in Soccer, Baseball, or Cricket. Some have even compared American Football to the ancient gladiatorial spectacles of Rome. Though not as fatal as those ancient games the analogy is not inaccurate. In fact, the only notable differences are the lack of weapons and the improved nature of the Colosseum’s. In any event most of the fans are looking forward to another season of the NFL and the sense of normality that comes with it.
