UPSC announced new exam dates for Civil services preliminary exam 2020. The IAS prelims 2020 exam will be held on October 4, 2020. The IAS exam 2020(main) will be held from January 8, 2021. The UPSC new exam dates were declared on June 5, 2020, through a press release of the new UPSC exam calendar 2020. The new exam dates have been postponed to approximately four months.
UPSC Civil services preliminary exam is the most renowned examination in the country. Lakhs of candidates aspire to join the Indian Administrative Services as their dream job. Indian Administrative Service Exam is the most coveted exam in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Union Public Service Commission recruits the candidates for:
- Indian Administrative Services (IAS)
- Indian Police Services (IPS)
- Central Civil Services including the Indian Foreign Services through this exam.
All the ministries and the departments in the union and state governments are led by the IAS officers. Hence, the IAS exam has gained this much importance. The topper of this exam has the opportunity to become the Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India. It is the highest bureaucratic position in India.
IAS 2020 Notification was issued on February 12, 2020. It notified about:
- the IAS vacancies 2020,
- the timeline for the exam,
- official IAS syllabus,
- the number of attempts and the likes.
IAS notification 2020 was announced by UPSC as per the UPSC calendar for 2020. UPSC has informed about 796 vacancies.
HISTORY OF CIVIL SERVICES EXAM
Merit-based Civil Services was first initiated in India in 1854. For this purpose, a Civil Service Commission was formed in 1854 in London and a competitive examination was conducted in 1855. This service was called Indian Civil Services(ICS) at that time. Firstly, in 1922, the Indian Civil Service Examination began to be held in India. The ICS examination in London continued to be conducted by the Civil Service Commission.

Process
The UPSC Prelims exam is meant to serve as a qualifying exam only. The marks of Paper 1 are only considered for making the Merit list. The marks scored in Prelims exam is not counted in the final tally of Mains exam or the interview
The Civil Service Prelims consists of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The questions are of multiple-choice, objective type. First Paper is of General Studies Paper 1 and the other is General Studies Paper 2 popularly known as CIVIL SERVICE APTITUDE TEST (CSAT). After qualifying the Preliminary exam the candidate appears for the Main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional essay type, in which two papers are just to qualify and marks of the other seven are counted followed by a personality test called to interview.
ELIGIBILITY
Nationality
- The candidate must be an Indian citizen for Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Sevice.
- For additional services, the candidate must be one of the following:
- Indian citizen.
- A citizen of Nepal or Bhutan
- A Tibetan refugee who settled permanently in India before 1 January 1962.
- An individual of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam to permanently reside in India.
Eeducational qualification
All candidates must hold as a minimum one of the following educational qualifications:
- A degree from any recognized university.
- A degree received by correspondence or distance education.
- A degree from an open university.
- A qualification recognized by the Government of India as being equivalent to any of the above mentioned
Number of attempts
The number of times a candidate can take this examination is given below.
- General category candidates – 6
- OBC category candidates – 9
- SC/ST candidates – limitless attempts till 37 years of age.
