confession on “Red Table Talk” breaks FB’s original viewership Records
Jada Pinkett Smith’s revelation on “Red Table Talk” that she was in a relationship with rapper August Alsine has broken all previous records that the show had.
“Red Table Talk” which is an original series of Facebook saw record viewing within 16 hours of its posting. It became the most watched episode within 24 hours of its release. The 12 minute episode has received 12 million views.
In the 12 minute episode, Jada Pinkett Smith is seen discussing with husband Will Smith about her relationship with August Alsine while Will and her were temporarily separated. Jada had said in her July 2 tweet that “There’s some healing that needs to happen…so I’m bringing myself to The Red Table.”
“Red Table Talk” was first aired in May 2018, and since then has had 62 episodes. The series is hosted by Pinkett Smith along with her daughter, Willow Smith, and her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris (aka “Gammy”). The topics range from sex, relationships, parenting to name a few.
About the most recent episode, Variety TV critic Caroline Framke wrote, “It’s a perfect distillation of what ‘Red Table Talk’ and the Pinkett-Smiths do best: dissecting a controversial topic with meticulous consideration, an eye for relating it back to the audience, and just enough intrigue to keep people guessing as to what’s truly going through their heads.”
The show was nominated for Daytime Emmy in 2019, which is a first for Facebook. The show has a 9.2 million viewership on Facebook along with other related forums. Facebook has reportedly renewed a 3 year contract of series till 2022.
Facebook is in talks with starting another original series in the same format featuring singer Gloria Estefan, her daughter, Emily Estefan, and her niece Lili Estefan, produced by Westbrook Studios.
In my opinion, Facebook should consider starting a similar format series for Indian audience as well taking the “Kapoor sisters and their best buddies.” That would be interesting for sure!
