The Vijay TVK Government Formation issue has now reached the Supreme Court after a petition demanded that Vijay should get the first opportunity to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu politics has entered a dramatic new phase after a petition was filed in the Supreme Court regarding government formation in the state. The plea asks the Governor of Tamil Nadu to invite Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the next government.
The issue has quickly become one of the most talked-about political developments in the country.
TVK Emerges as the Largest Party

In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. While the party did not cross the majority mark on its own, it emerged as the single largest party in the state.
The Congress party won 5 seats and reportedly extended support to TVK. This pushed the alliance tally to 113 seats, just five short of the required majority figure of 118.
Despite this, the Governor has not yet invited any party to form the government.
Vijay TVK Government Formation Plea Explained
The petition was filed by advocate Ezhilarasi P, who claims to be a member of TVK. The plea argues that constitutional rules and past Supreme Court judgments support inviting the single largest party first.
According to the petition, the Governor’s role is to invite the party to form the government and then allow it to prove majority support on the Assembly floor.
The plea also says that testing majority through a floor test is the only democratic method accepted under constitutional practice.
Vijay Met Governor to Stake Claim
Reports suggest that Vijay met Governor R. N. Ravi on May 7, 2026, to officially stake claim to form the government.
However, according to a statement released from Raj Bhavan, the Governor informed Vijay that sufficient majority support had not yet been established.
This response has now triggered legal and political debate across Tamil Nadu.
Vijay TVK Government Formation Sparks Constitutional Debate
The petition refers to several important Supreme Court judgments and recommendations made by the Sarkaria Commission. According to the plea, if no pre-poll alliance has a majority, then the single largest party with outside support should receive the first invitation.
The petitioner claims that denying this opportunity goes against constitutional principles and democratic tradition.
Political experts believe the matter could become a major constitutional discussion if the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case urgently.
Political Reactions Over Vijay TVK Government Formation
Supporters of TVK say Vijay deserves the first chance because his party won the highest number of seats. On social media, many users have started debating whether Governors should have more limited powers during government formation.
At the same time, opposition parties are closely watching the developments, as the final decision could influence future coalition politics in other states as well.
Why This Moment Matters
The situation is important not just for Tamil Nadu, but also for Indian politics in general. It raises questions about constitutional conventions, the role of Governors, and how democracy functions during a hung Assembly.
For Vijay, this is also a major political moment. After entering politics with huge public attention, he now stands at the center of a constitutional and political battle that could shape his future leadership journey.
