The bridge was hit around 7:30 p.m. Monday evening. Video footage from bystanders shows how several containers were damaged and the ship then transited.
The bridge is closed to road traffic pending a thorough inspection. “We have decided to divert all traffic for the time being via the Budabrug and the Verbrande Brug,” explains Caroline Peelaerts of the Flemish Waterway. It is currently unclear how long the diversion will be necessary. “The bridge has a vertical clearance of 8.90 meters, so all ships that are lower than that can still pass under the bridge.”
