Maybe you misunderstood when you first heard about this World Food Day. Many people barely know this day even exists. Even then, when you think of Food Day, you might start thinking of BBQ or your favorite foods. Well, to explain for you, World Food Day, October 16th, isn’t about anything like that despite the name. World Food Day is a day of action against hunger. On this day, we all try to take action against hunger both around the world and in your local community. From entire towns to small families, the emphasis of this day is to make a difference in food problems everywhere. Additionally, the day is used to raise awareness for those who don’t know.
Additionally, the day marks the foundation of the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization, also called FAO. It was established as a United Nations organization on October 16th, 1945.
The theme for this year’s World Food Day is right below, word for word:
“Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together. Our actions are our future.”
Businesses, the media, and the public tend to unite on this day to complete the day’s intended goal. They promote awareness, run drives, and provide aid concerning those who suffer from hunger.
The Food and Agriculture site by the UN has this to say concerning this year’s day.
“World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO in an exceptional moment as countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a time to look into the future we need to build together.”
“As countries deal with the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, World Food Day 2020 will highlight how food and agriculture are an essential part of the COVID-19 response. WFD 2020 will call for global cooperation and solidarity to help the most vulnerable to recover from the crisis. It will call on countries to build back better by making food systems more resilient and robust so they can withstand increasing volatility and climate shocks, deliver healthy and sustainable diets for all, and decent livelihoods for food system workers.”
