Global Wind Day is also known as World Wind Day. It celebrated worldwide on 15th of June each year. We celebrate this day to acknowledge the power and possibilities the wind holds to change the world. The wind has the potential to reshape the energy system and decarbonise the economy.
In more than 80 countries around the globe, wind farms are in motion. It generates energy from clean and renewable sources. Global wind day organised by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and WindEurope together they celebrate the achievement of wind energy. High usage of fossil fuels led to an adverse impact on our ecosystem, and that is one reason why people are moving towards renewable sources.
Significance of Global Wind Day aka World Wind Day
Wind energy is renewable, that means it will not finish after using it, like solar energy or power. Compared to other energy it’s quite cheaper. World Wind Day observed to let people know about the importance and effects it has on the world. This day emphasises more on its usage and significance. Wind energy is beneficial for economic development as well because it creates a lot of jobs.
To make people aware of this day, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) organise various events and competition like poster making, slogan writing, etc. This event is not limited to European countries only. But countries around the world take part in it to raise awareness.
The wind energy is a rapid-growing energy form. Also, it is one of the cost-effective ways to generate electricity around many parts of the world. The Global Wind Energy Council is helping people to understand the importance of wind energy.
But what is wind energy?
By now you might be wondering, what is wind energy to be precise? Well, wind energy and wind power is the process of creating electricity using the wind, which is renewable. Wind turbines harness the power of the wind and convert it into electricity. It is easy to comprehend when the wind blows, blades of the turbines move clockwise, and in the process captures energy that turned out to become electricity.
The wind that we feel created by the rotation of the earth, differentiation in the earth’s surface, and uneven heating of the earth’s atmosphere by the sun. So, there are various factors involves, behind its conception.
Here are some fun facts to remember:
- In 2019, more than 60 gigawatts of wind energy capacity installed worldwide
- Also in 2019, North, South and Central America installed 13.4 gigawatts of wind power capacity, a whopping increment of 13% compared to 2018
- Top wind markets are China, United States, Germany, India, Spain, Brazil, France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Denmark and Canada
- Global Wind Day first began in Europe in 2007, later on, in 2009, the idea adopted by world
Learning the concept is not that hard. Renewable energy is the best source for a sustainable future. In a chaotic world where we live in, each day brings something magnificent as well as something unexpected.
