In the 1930s, Barbara became the first person to create pierced figures. Gradually, she garnered popularity for her increased lead in ‘direct sculpting’ (as shown in Google Doodle). Barbara made more than 600 sculptures in her lifetime, each popular for their distinctiveness.

Barbara has also earned some important feathers in her cap. In 1959, she was awarded the Grand Prix. Then again in 1965, Barbara was duly recognized for her contribution to British art and named as the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Google thanks Barbara “for using your art to help carve a path toward greater harmony within our society and environment.” Speaking of his art, Doodler Matt Cruickshank says that Barbara inspired him in this endeavor. His source of inspiration was something that Barbara said- “I draw what I feel in my body.”. And he hopes that his artwork can inspire people to achieve greater harmony as Barbara did with her sculpting.
