Robert Pattinson(Batman) and Holland(Spiderman) together? It is finally a reality in “Devil all the Time”. While the casting is superb with seasoned and exceptional actors, the movie itself is a drag. Though this casting alone is enough to interest the people. The movie is adapted from Dale Ray Polluck’s novel with a story that proceeds with characters in parallel tracks. Gear up for a lot of unpleasantness and Violence.
In fact, Polluck is actually the narrator of the movie a lot of times. He is natural, adding authentic vibes to the Devil all the time, directed by Antonio Campos. Yet other than assembling an extraordinarily great cast even for minor roles, the way it is represented actually drains the life from the work.
More Bout The Film
The devil all the time feels like a Coen brother with a mix of L.A confidential in its Music and period. But although it has the vivid vibrancy of that era, and mystery surrounding a small town, it lacks the sense that those films have. It shifts focus around so quickly that the audience becomes confused and restless for things to make sense.
While I know many would be drawn by just these incredible superstars, be warned that most do not appear for more than half the movie. The film begins with a flashback to 1957 with a soldier returning home from WW2. And before you can grasp it jumps 20 years ahead to Vietnam. With so many characters onboard the film jumps from one to another giving The Devil All the time an episodic feel.
There’s a Boy (Holland) now grown-up son of the Solider. Who ended up being raised with a young girl who has survived a tragedy. Then enter a serial killer couple, a corrupt sheriff, and a Lascivious priest. All could have been a beautiful story but alas the movie is a slog.
But the popular cast will still make it the top film on Netflix. So I think you could give it a watch, Maybe you will like it.
