Haikyuu Season 5 Release Date, Expected Plot, Characters and Season’s Recap

For athletes especially volleyball players, sports lovers, and anime fans, the Haikyuu anime series have been giving them much fun and action. That is why fans have been waiting for the latest updates about Haikyuu Season 5.  Originally, Haikyuu is intended for young teen male viewers, but due to its popularity and storyline, it caught the attention of massive fans around the world.

Release Date: Haikyuu Season 5 is not expected to be released but a movie named Haikyu!! Final, is expected to be released and that too in two individual parts. The first movie out of the two is to be released in January 2023 and the next one will be released in October 2023 as per rumors.

Haikyuu’s Background

Haikyu in Japanese katakana means “volleyball.” It is a sports anime genre with a twist of action, comedy, and some drama that athletes can face on their journey to success.

Haikyuu is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Fudate. It is an anime television series adaptation by Productions I.G.In North America, the manga has been licensed by Viz Media, while the anime series has been licensed for digital and home release by Sentai Filmworks.

Both manga and anime got a positive response from their fans and critics around the globe. As a result, the Haikyuu series won the 61st Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga in 2016. As of May 2020, Haikyu had over 38 million copies in print. Its chapters were serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2012 through July 2020. Similarly, as of May 2020, forty-three tankōbon volumes have been released in Japan by Shueisha.

Road to Season 5:  The Recap

Season 1: aired from April 6 to September 21, 2014, with 25 episodes.

Season 1 of Haikyuu featured a small high school boy, Hinata Shoyo, who has a dream of becoming the best volleyball player in Japan. Following his idol (The Tiny Giant), he ends up attending Karasuno High School to pursue his dream. He was able to enter the volleyball team, but he did not expect to meet Kageyama, his enemy from his past. It even got worse when he found out that they must both work together if they want to qualify for the Nationals.

Hinata is physically small in height, but his hopes and dreams are big.

Season 2: aired from October 2015 to March 2016 with 25 episodes

Season 2 of Haikyuu focused on the crazy duo improving their offensive attack. Karasuno attended a training camp and met top players with some of the top teams in Tokyo including Fukurōdani, Nekoma, Shinzen, and Ubugawa. They all continue to work hard and enhance their skills in preparation for the Spring nationals.

Season 3:  aired from October 2016 to December 2016 with 10 episodes

In this season of Haikyuu, Karasuno won against Aoba High and finally reached the climax of the heated Spring tournament. However, to advance to nationals the Karasuno team had to defeat the Shiratorizawa Academy. Likewise,  Karasuno’s greatest barrier was their rival’s ace, Wakatoshi Ushijima. He is the best player in the Miyagi District, and one of the country’s top three players.

Karasuno had to use everything they learned during the training camp and prior matches to attain victory. Only the strongest team will make it to the national team. Since this game is the third-year players’ last chance to qualify for nationals, Haikyuu Season 3 is a deciding match.

Season 4: Haikyuu To The Top was aired from January to April 2020

The Karasuno High School Volleyball Club finally won their way into the nationals after an intense battle for the Miyagi District Spring Tournament qualifiers. As they were preparing for the nationals, All-Japan Youth Training Camp invited Kageyama to join them. At the same time, Tsukishima attended a special rookie select training camp for first-years in Miyagi Prefecture. Hinata panicked that he was being left behind as one of the first-years, so he decided to show up at the Miyagi District rookie select training camp. As they prepare for the nationals, Hinata, Kageyama and the rest of the Karasuno High School Volleyball team face new challenges!

Expected Plot and Soundtrack of Haiikyuu Season 5

According to Haikyuu’s production team, the upcoming Haikyuu Season 5 will not use a new name just like the other seasons. Instead, it will continue with the name Haikyuu ToThe Top Season 2. But Netflix will adapt it and will stream it online as Haikyuu Season 5 after the season ends.

Previously, we saw the hardships of Karasuno in facing its rival team, and its struggle to enter the game. Likewise, we saw Tobio Kageyama and his rival Shoyo Hinata rising as the best Volleyball player. In the meantime, Hinata sneaks into the training camp of Tsukishima to win the competition.

Furthermore, we can expect the story to continue based on all these previous vital points. At the same time, action-packed volleyball games, more conflicts, and funny acts will excite the fans in Haikyuu’s season 5.

Also, the soundtrack gives more meaning to the upcoming Haikyuu Season 5. For Haikyuu Season 5, Yoshiki Kobayashi, a music producer in Japan, revealed a few details on the new soundtracks of Season 5 through his official Twitter account.

After working for famous anime franchises, Asami Tachibana and Hayashi are in-charge of the recordings of Haikyuu Season 5 new tracks. The list includes Mobile Suit Gundam and Star Twinkle Precure.

Release Date

Haikyuu! To The Top Season 4, Part 2 or Season 5 is coming way faster than some fans are expecting. Production I.G. has officially announced that the popular volleyball anime will be returning this 2023.

Unfortunately, the official release date for Haikyuu Season 5 is not yet known. This was due to the global pandemic that we are having right now. However, it seems that a premiere schedule will drop anytime soon since some parts of Japan have already lifted quarantine orders.

Haikyuu Season 5: The Famous Schools and Main Characters

Haikyuu Season 5 will bring back its famous characters, and voice cast to represent their school. Let’s get to know them better.

Karasuno High School- “Flightless Crows” and “Fallen Champs”

Uniform colors: Navy and orange.

It is located in Miyagi District, Tōhoku region. Karasuno means “crow.”   They were formerly the strongest team but some challenges made them weak. Also, Kuroo calls them “Country Bumpkin Crows”, for they live in a relatively rural area. This is Haikyuu Season 5 main school.

Main Players:

Shōyō Hinata- “Little Giant” / “Perfect Decoy”

Voiced by Ayumu Murase (Japanese); Bryson Baugus (English)

Height: 210 cm

Hinata is Haikyuu’s main and favorite character. He was initially a wing spiker in Junior High but is currently a middle blocker. Coincidentally, he is the number 10, the former Karsuno ace and his idol, also wore. Moreover, his speed and incredible vertical jump allow him to play as a decoy to trick their opponent.

He also wants to become the ace, but he learned and accepted the importance of his role. Moreover, Hinata is cheerful, strong, and kind. Despite his height, carelessness, and lack of basic skills, his power, attitude, and strength put him in a spot on the regular line-up. A lot of fans are looking forward to seeing him again in Haikyuu Season 5.

Tobio Kageyama- “King of Court”

Voiced by Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese); Scott Gibbs (English)

Height: 239 cm.

Kageyama is a first-year student. He is known as a volleyball genius because of his incredible setting talent.

Besides, he has an amazing game sense and can play almost every role at a high level. Kageyama’s super talent is likely to unite his team, but he can also destroy it. However, throughout the anime, Kageyama has successfully used his talent and skill to bring out the best in the team.

Kei Tsukishima

Voiced by Kōki Uchiyama, (Japanese); Leraldo Anzaldua (English)

Height: 248 cm

Tsukishima is a first-year student at Karasuno High School and a clever middle-blocker. He is Karasuno’s tallest player. Although he is calm and polite, his bossy attitude often makes his teammates and other teams angry.

Ryūnosuke Tanaka-

Voiced by Yū Hayashi (Japanese); Greg Cote (English)

Height: 224 cm

Tanaka is a second-year student and wing spiker on the volleyball team. He is praised to be the next star after Asahi because of his impressive spiking skill. Also, he is the type of player who never gives up on a “live” ball. Furthermore, he plays well in high-stress situations.

Yū Nishinoya- “Karasuno’s Guardian Deity.”

Voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese); Greg Ayres (English)

Height: 208 cm

Nishinoya is a second-year student and the libero in the volleyball club. He has the most amazing defensive skills.

 Asahi Azumane-

Voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese); Orlanders Jones (English)

Height:242 cm

Asahi is a third-year student at Karasuno and a wing spiker. He is physically the strongest player on the team. Also, he is the current ace of Karasuno and the attacker of the team.

Kōshi Sugawara-

Voiced by Miyu Irino (Japanese); Adam Gibbs[(English)

Height: 222 cm

Sugawara is a third-year student at Karasuno High School. He is the vice-captain and the sub-setter of the team. He was replaced by first-year prodigy Kageyama.

Daichi Sawamura-

Voiced by Satoshi Hino (Japanese); Justin Doran (English)

Height: 223 cm

Daichi is third-year at Karasuno High School. He is the team captain and wing spiker. He leads Karasuno High school during his freshman year because the team didn’t have a formal coach. As a result, he learned a lot of volleyball’s technicalities by himself.

Aoba Johsai High School- Karasuno’s “Archenemy”

Banner: “Rule the Court”

Uniform colors: white and turquoise

It is a private high school located in Miyagi District. One of the best volleyball teams and ranks fourth in the district. Besides, the team’s playstyle is strategic and aggressive. Haikyuu season 5 fans are expecting more rivalry from this team.

Main Player

Toru Oikawa- “The Great King.”

Voiced by Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese); Chris Patton (English)

Oikawa is a third-year student at Aoba Johsai High. He is the captain and starting setter of the team.. He was one of the first antagonists in the Haikyuu series. On the other hand, he is one of the best setters in the Miyagi area. Moreover, he was previously Kageyama’s senior when they both played for Kitagawa Daiichi. He is the most hated but loved character in the Haikyuu series.

Nekoma High School- “The Cats”

Banner: “Connect”

Uniform colors: Red and Black

Nekoma High is located in Nerima Ward of Tokyo. The word Neko means ‘cat’ in Japanese. Besides, they are the longest rival of Karasuno High School. Nekoma has a strong floor defense and receivers.

Main Player

Tetsurō Kuroo- “Scheming captain”

Voiced by Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese); Ty Mahany (English)

Kuroo is a third-year student at Nekoma. He is the captain of the volleyball club and a talented middle blocker known for his ‘read blocks’.  Also, Kuroo is a playful and sly person.

Date Tech High School- “The Iron Wall”.

Banner: “Date Tech’s Iron Wall”

Uniform Color: White and Teal

Date Tech High School- Dateko for short is located in Miyagi District. The team is best in blocking and has the highest blocking rate in the district.

Main Player

Kaname Moniwa-

Voiced by Takashi Onozuka (Japanese); Patrick Pool (English)

Moniwa is a third-year student at Dateko High. He is a setter and the captain of Dateko’s volleyball team during the Interhigh. Students in the lower years always give him stress. So, he often needed help from other teammates to keep them in control.

Fukurodani Academy- “Fukurodani Academy Group”

Banner: “One ball, heart, and soul”

Uniform Colors: Black, white, and gold

It is located in Tokyo. The ‘fukuro’ in the school name means ‘owl’, which is also their official animal representative. Fukurodani is a powerhouse school that ranks in Tokyo’s top 4 and has been to Nationals multiple times.

Shiratorizawa Academy- “White Eagles”

Banner:” Irresistible Force”

Uniform Colors: White and Maroon

The school is located in Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi District. The first two characters of its school name (白鳥) mean ‘swan’ in Japanese, but its direct translation is ‘white bird’.  Moreover, they were the undefeated champions in the Miyagi district and ranks the top 8.

Inarizaki High School

Banner: We don’t need the memories”

Uniform Colors: Black and White

It is a high school located in the Hyōgo District of the Kansai region. The school name uses the same kanji as Inari Ōkami, the Shinto deity of foxes. Inarizaki has a large marching band, orchestra, and cheer team at their games. They have a passionate fanbase known for booing at opposing teams in any Haikyuu series.

Itachiyama Academy

Uniforms color: bright yellow, green, and white

Itachiyama Academy is a high school in Tokyo. Kiyoomi Sakusa is their best player and is ranked third in Japan. Likewise, their libero, Motoya Komori, is the number one high school libero in Japan.

Well, not until the release, all we can do is eagerly wait for Haikyuu Season 5.
